Star Wars fans never saw the moment coming. Forty years ago, before decades of films and expanded lore had solidified Star Wars‘ tone, fans of the swashbuckling space opera sat down in theaters to watch The Empire Strikes Back. The movie’s release at the end of May 1980 officially turned the fluke, world-changing sci-fi flick of 1977 into a film franchise, and it expanded what Star Wars could be as a genre within a genre. Specifically, the franchise—one partially defined at the time by a cantina jig turned disco hit—could be dark. And not just dark, but terrifying. Continue here
